The War of the Liturgy Continues

  /   Friday, January 03, 2003   /   Comments(0)

It appears that Jeff Culbreath ain’t giving up, and Michelle takes exception to his post. The link is on her blog.

I, too, have stated that I do not know that I would be Catholic today if it weren’t for the use of the vernacular in the Liturgy. At the time of my conversion, I was a teenager with a very different perspective than what I have now. It was only recently that I have begun to understand why Latin was used in liturgy. Today, I would have no objections to the use of Latin. Back then, or even just 3-4 years ago, it would have been too weird for me to comprehend.

So, was I Catholic all of those years. Of course I was! Even if a bias against the use of Latin is a disqualifying factor, it was pure ignorance.

The Spirit of the “Vatican II” Liturgy

  /   Friday, January 03, 2003   /   Comments(0)

With quotes around the Vatican II in the title for a reason. I was led to look at Jeff Miller’s early archive to find this gem.

Well, so much for the light blogging. I think I’ve now blogged and commented more on my dad’s computer than I did on my own today.

What a Jack@$$

I thought that I had seen the ultimate in lawsuits when the guy sued fast food restaurants because he was fat. Now, Tom Abbott found this story about a guy whose had his name legally changed to Jack Ass who is suing Viacom over their movie and TV show.

Here it is again on Overlawyered.com.

Now, You Conferred What Degree on Me??

  /   Friday, January 03, 2003   /   Comments(0)

I got a fundraising letter from my alma mater (University of Mississippi aka Ole Miss) a few weeks ago. It was addressed to “Mr. C. David Ancell” Now, I’m not all caught up in being called Dr. Ancell. In fact, I prefer to be called David since I’m only 27 years old. However, I got my doctorate from this university. Shouldn’t they know that I have it?

Safely Home

  /   Friday, January 03, 2003   /   Comments(0)

Here I am at my parents house in the little town of Sikeston, Missouri. I noticed on the sign today that the population has decreased to 16.992 people. When I lived here, it was about 17,500 people. Tomorrow I will be the lector in my sister’s best friend’s wedding. Kristin, my sister, is the maid of honor.

I see that I’ve been able to blog more than I have in a long time. I’m getting more comments on my blog than ever before. Spiritual Pyromania, the team blog that I administer and share with my church group, has just received an influx of new posts. I feel pretty good today.

Soon it will be onward to the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. I’m excited because I’ve never been to a rehearsal dinner before nor have I been part of a wedding party.

Off I Go

  /   Friday, January 03, 2003   /   Comments(0)

I’ve sure enjoyed having more time to blog because I have been off from work. However, now I must go off to my hometown for a wedding. I am going to be the lector. So, it will probably be light blogging for the rest of the weekend. I should be normal by Monday, at least as normal as I get.

City Fundraiser

  /   Friday, January 03, 2003   /   Comments(0)

Every since Jeff Miller started leaving comments on his blog, I’ve been an avid reader of his. This is a good example of what he finds. I can think of no other reason for ticketing someone for leaving his lights on than as an attempt to raise funds for the city.

I remember being in Springfield, IL and stopping by the Marian Center, a Catholic bookstore. I got a $25 back in 1999 for parking more than twelve inches from the curb. I wrote them a letter asking them to reconsider, and I didn’t get anywhere. I’m glad I didn’t move to Springfield.

War of the Blog

  /   Friday, January 03, 2003   /   Comments(0)

I may have started (or perpetuated) a war. Take a look at this post. The comments will appear below when you follow this link. I’ve never had an entry get five comments on it before. Michelle and Jeff Culbreath are having a bout here on my comments section.

Hey! It makes for enjoyable reading. Do check it out. They probably love each other in real life.

Drug Commercials

  /   Friday, January 03, 2003   /   Comments(0)

The NY Times has a good opinion article about drug commercials. As a pharmacist, I do have a bit of a problem with direct-to-consumer marketing of medications. Taking medication as though it were a fashion accessory is a bad, bad idea.

I do believe that the good doctor is being a bit optimistic when she says:

But most doctors, unlike patients, make their decisions based on clinical experience, and at least where I work, doctors usually greet these drug promotions with a dose of skepticism.

This is true in a lot of cases, but I have heard plenty of advice on medications from a doctor that sounds like it is straight out of the sales pitch of a drug company rep. Some doctors will prescribe a patient anything to keep them happy. I’ve even heard of one doctor who prescribed a medication because it was manufactured by a company in which he owned stock.

Liturgy and Sin

  /   Thursday, January 02, 2003   /   Comments(0)

I just had another thought:

Is it a sin to use OCP materials in your liturgy?

Now, granted, I’m not talking about playing music published by OCP in your home. I have a few of their CDs myself, so I hope it isn’t wrong. However, there is plenty there that isn’t appropriate for Mass.
