Know When to Stop

  /   Sunday, March 09, 2003   /   Comments(0)

I was driving down a major six-lane road in the Memphis area when I saw an advertisement on a truck for a mobile TV. For about $500, you can install a TV and DVD player in your car. Yeah, that’s just what Memphis drivers need.

What will they think of next? Maybe we’ll see a mobile computer that allows you to surf the Internet while driving.

Into the Future

  /   Saturday, March 08, 2003   /   Comments(0)

Maybe we’ll see this in the future . . . . . if you don’t understand this, e-mail me.

The Rev. Ned Yelps passed away. Last respects were paid to him by his members as he had led them for almost 50 years. His beloved flock stood at his graveside with signs saying “Yelps in Hell.” and “God Hates Yelps.” When asked why they were doing this, one church member responded “We figured this was just a way to honor the dead since in life he did this at every funeral he went to.” Another Church member said “The Bible says to ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ Since this is what he did to a lot of people, I was just assuming that this is what he would want for himself.”

We Would Be Better Off

  /   Saturday, March 08, 2003   /   Comments(0)

I think Jeff Miller hit the nail on the head. A Jesuit provincial plans to go on strike for a day to protest the war against Iraq if it begins. Let’s not forget that, aside from the idiodicy of the suggestion, maybe we’d be better off if the Jesuits (with a few noted exceptions) took a long strike.

Accidents Happen

In this case, I think that it was good that an accident happened. Thumbs up to Mr. Lawler.

Romantic Trip to Gehenna

  /   Saturday, March 08, 2003   /   Comments(0)

According to a NY Times article too sickening to link to and this post by Kevin Miller, couples now have one more road to take for a “romantic” trip to the Gehenna valley. I’m not presupposing knowledge of who goes there, but the use of contraception is definitely a step in that direction. I don’t know why this is so exciting, even to people with no morals.

Hate One Another

  /   Friday, March 07, 2003   /   Comments(0)

I was going to find the actual words of “Reverend” Fred Phelps, but after reading this article, I tend to agree that to quote him would be to assist him in defamation of a good man, namely Mr. Rogers. Yes, Phelps has added our wonderful neighbor to the list of people whom he presumes are in Hell.

I hope not to downplay the grevious nature of the scandal produced by men like Phelps, but it is an example of a man whose zeal is mixed with absolutely no prudence. Prudence is a virtue. Without it, we become susceptible to fanatacism. If the devil can’t turn you away from the cause, he will indiscriminately turn you against everything. This appears to be what happened to Phelps. Pray for the man.

Reverence

  /   Thursday, March 06, 2003   /   Comments(0)

I have to congratulate a priest whose weird statements are often featured on this blog. He got up in front of the high schoolers at Mass today and talked about gestures of reverence and the need to be conscious of what they are doing. He told them not to do stuff like the flyswatter Sign of the Cross or the curtsy genflection. Guess what . . . . he had their full attention as far as I could tell.

Real Debate

  /   Thursday, March 06, 2003   /   Comments(0)

I don’t even need to comment on this on the HMS Blog. Dr. Helwig gave a charitable response to the Mighty Barrister, and he responded in kind. Barrister did such a great job of responding that my comments would add nothing to his.

CRAAAAASH

  /   Thursday, March 06, 2003   /   Comments(0)

Being the technophile that I am, I really like my new Tungsten T Palm Pilot. However, I have a question for those of you who have Palm Pilots. Does yours crash at about every other HotSync? Sometimes it takes me 3-4 times to get a HotSync to go through completely without me having to soft reset the device afterward. It’s driving me nuts. I would never expect that a small, non-Microsoft device would crash like this one does.

Ash Wednesday in Review

  /   Wednesday, March 05, 2003   /   Comments(0)

For the third consecutive year, I went to Mass before going to work on Ash Wednesday and wore the ashes to work. I was surprised to learn that my senior manager did the same thing, but she didn’t get as many ashes as I got. My supervisor tried to take some of the ashes to put on his own forehead.

I heard plenty of comments, too, like:

“What’s that on your forehead?”

“Oh, it took me a second to realize what that was. I forgot about Ash Wednesday.”

“Do you know that you have a spot on your forehead?”

Now that I’ve been Catholic for almost 12 years, I think it would drive me crazy if Easter came all of a sudden with no Lent. Do Protestants just, all of a sudden, think “Hey! It’s Easter.” Easter wouldn’t have the same feel to me if it weren’t for the beautiful Holy Tridium that precedes it and the Lent we have spent in preparation.
