Judie Brown of the American Life League has this response to the “Seamless Garment” approach to life issues. How someone can reasonably argue that the right to affordable housing is just as important as the right to live is beyond me. I mean, affordable housing is very vital, but how can we talk about housing as a right when we’ve decided that a certain kind of people don’t even have the right to live.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against people having affordable housing, nor am I against ending world hunger. What I am against is the use of the “seamless garment” approach as an excuse not to speak out against politicians who are supporting a grave evil and then claiming to be Catholic. While being pro-life will not in and itself assure salvation, knowingly and willingly not being pro-life will likely ensure damnation. On top of that, it ensures that ever Communion received is a sacriliege. Who is to say that the bishop who neither says or does anything about it won’t also be held accountable before Almighty God?
