The Vatican has finally released the long-anticipated document on the Mass. It was written by Cardinal Arinze. I’ve read the document, and I’m grateful for what it says.
However, I’m not so optimistic about the odds of our current hierarchy actually enforcing it. In fact, you will note that one-third of the document is footnotes. In other words, there is little or nothing there that hasn’t already been stated somewhere else. I’m praying for the day when the Vatican realizes that they have written enough documents, and it is now time to enforce the ones that are written.
Don’t get me wrong. Cardinal Arinze is a hero of mine, especially after the Georgetown University incident. My point is that I’m hoping that he’ll be given the authority to enforce this document when the local bishop won’t.
