How Did They Vote?

  /   Wednesday, March 23, 2005   /   Comments(0)

How did your representative vote on the bill to protect Terri Schiavo? check out this Off the Record post for the link. My rep voted for it, fortunately. Of course, our fine Tennessee Senator Bill Frist worked very hard for this also. I’m proud to say that I voted for Senator Frist; it was the first time I voted in Tennessee. The only problem now is that our federal judiciary has pretty much ignored the new law.

I think we’ve known this one for a while. The media has consistently stated supposed “facts” without looking at other facts known to those on the pro-life side of the case of Terri Schiavo. Why can’t they take the blinders off?

What Will Happen?

  /   Monday, March 21, 2005   /   Comments(0)

It’s probably well-known by now that Congress has successfully passed, and President George W. Bush has signed, a law to give the Schindlers some leverage in federal court. However, we must continue to pray because the judge hasn’t ruled yet. I hope that this judge will acknowledge that there is something important about this matter given all the work that was done on Terri Schiavo’s behalf. I hope that he won’t just say the law in unconstitutional. Please continue to pray.

The Killing of the Innocent

  /   Sunday, March 20, 2005   /   Comments(0)

By now, anyone who reads this blog probably already knows that Terry Schiavo’s feeding tube has been removed. To make matters worse, it was done in defiance of a subpoena issued by Congress. Supposedly, just like Terri’s law passed in Florida, it violates the “separation of powers.” Hello, robed wizard, did it ever occur to you that the people don’t want you to have unrestrained power, either? Your job is to interpret the laws. If your interpretation doesn’t come as intended, then the legislature has the right to change the laws to have them read as needed.

I hope that Judge Greer is impeached for this one. In fact, being a resident of Tennessee, I wrote Senator Frist asking that he work to have this done (as well as get the necessary bill through Congress to get Ms. Schiavo’s feeding tube reinserted). This is a clear abuse of power. Despite what the editors at the New York Times think, the court decisions handed down could hardly be described as “careful decisions.” Look at the conflicts of interest in the case of her husband. The man is living with another woman by whom he has had two children. For whatever reason that I cannot judge, Judge George Greer has chosen to ignore these and to become a party to this murder. It obviously had his effect, because he has withdrawn his membership in his church. I sincerely hope he repents before he dies.

Let’s not also forget the media distortion surrounding this case. The above linked-to editorial says that Ms. Schiavo is in a “persistent vegitative state.” This just isn’t so. Although she hasn’t and probably never will fully recover, she is able to respond to stimuli. They are painting this entire legislative battle in Congress as nothing but an attempt to gain political support for their ambitions.

Better yet, let’s look at this little gem of a quote concerning Congressional Democrats:

They pointed to public opinion polls that show support for Mr. Schiavo’s right to decide his wife’s fate, but they also fear the power of the mobilized right.

Oh, yeah, let’s decide someone’s right to life on the basis of an opinion poll. Nevermind the misinformation that is out there. I have yet to see a secular media report on the other woman that Mr. Schiavo is living with. I’ve also not seen them make a report on the Schindler’s side of the story. As Fr. Rob Johansen can testify, the Schindler’s are very well aware of their daughter’s condition and the fact that she will never fully recover. However, this is their daughter. They know that life is sacred, and this is what they are fighting for.

Ok, this has turned into one long rant. However, this is really far more important than any family dispute. This has the potential to set a long-standing precedent in the rights of the disabled. Our country has already taken away the rights of the unborn. If we continue in the direction we are going, we will soon truly have a Culture of Death in our society. Let us pray that this can be stopped by the decent people in our nation.

Award Winner for Weirdness

State Representative Brian Dupey introduced a bill in Maine that would prohibit abortions on gay children. After all, it is contended that if the gay gene were ever found, many women may about their gay babies. Is this guy serious? Granted, it is no more morally acceptable to abort someone who is gay than it is to abort anyone else, but I really think the chances of discovering a gay gene are about the same as discovering a nudist colony on the South Pole.

Did You Ever Notice?

  /   Saturday, March 05, 2005   /   Comments(0)

I’ve been wanting to blog about the Holy Father’s ability to keep going no matter what people seem to think of his health. It amazes those of us who understand what he is trying to accomplish (Christ didn’t get off the cross.) and really upsets his detractors. In fact, one editorial complained that he kept on living to “impose his will” on the people. It was as though the Pope had been sending the Swiss guard to search people’s houses for packs of Ortho Tri-Cyclen.

No matter what I may think of the decisions he has made, I can’t help but think of the stories of a saint when I read this. Has anyone read about Mother Cabrini? She survived a number of illnesses that could have killed her. The Holy Father is now doing the same. Even though I question why he hasn’t been a stricter disciplinarian, I can’t help but think that God is already making preparation for his canonization by these somewhat miraculous recoveries that he heeps making. Maybe this is a way of showing us how God’s ways are far above his ways. It’s hard to deny that the Holy Father has been attentive to the Holy Spirit.

Murder in Progress

  /   Tuesday, February 22, 2005   /   Comments(0)

From what I have read lately, today will indeed be a sad day in history. The death clock for Terri Schiavo is starting again. In fact, it’s my understanding that, barring any intervention, it will have already started. Not even the most notorious of criminals in the country are condemned to death by starvation, but a woman whose only “crime” is that she is disabled will have her feeding tube removed and be slowly starved to death.

There are so many holes in this case that it is difficult to imagine why anything but ideology would lead some judge to make a decision leading to her death. No advance directive has ever been documented to have been produced stating Schiavo wanted to die. Her husband has the prospect of an inheritance upon her death and has been reported in some news sources to be living with another woman. It’s hard to fathom why these conflicts of interest are not brought to light.

However, regardless of Terri’s responsiveness or her husband’s conflicts of interest, the fact is that we are not the ones who determine whether or not life is “worth living.” From a purely natural perspective, where would this stop? It’s often cheaper and easier to kill someone than to try to help him/her. However, there’s more. Life is a gift from God, and it is not for us to determine it’s value. Those who try will have to stand before Almighty God.

Bought the Treo

  /   Tuesday, February 15, 2005   /   Comments(0)

In case anyone was wondering, yes, I did buy the Treo for Cingular. It works much better than the Sprint version did. I have already placed three calls to my family, and it worked fine. It also connects very quickly to my e-mail. I’m liking it so far, but I must admit it seems a bit fragile. I much prefer it to a BlackBerry because I have my Pocket Quicken and drug references on it.

Tempted by the Treo (Again)

  /   Sunday, February 06, 2005   /   Comments(0)

I just learned that Cingular has the Palm Treo 650 now for their service. The Cnet review that I read suggests that there is better call quality than with Sprint (where I had so much trouble). I’m really tempted to get it even though I’m now blogging from my Pocket PC.

I don’t know if I will or not. It doesn’t have much memory. On the other hand, I find that the Bluetooth connections to my PDAs break down after a few tries. Also, I’m not sure how sturdy the device is.

However, I had a lot of fun with it while I had it. If it makes good calls, it could be very handy. Then again, I’ve just discovered voice-dialing on my current phone.
